Walking in Galloway Forest Park
Walking in Galloway Forest Park
Galloway Forest Park is the largest Forest Park in Britain, with over 300 square miles of outstanding natural beauty. Luckily, there’s also an amazing selection of trails ranging from gentle strolls to serious mountain adventures, meaning you can enjoy the park at any time of year.
For gentle strolls and lochside ambles, head to our two friendly forest cafés - Kirroughtree and Glentrool. It’s just a short hop to the Red Squirrel hide from Kirroughtree or take an easy wander beside the loch to one of the two Bruce’s Stones in the park from Clatteringshaws.
There’s a host of wonderful things to see along our trails. Take a quick climb up to the other Bruce’s Stone for a stunning panorama over sparkling Loch Trool. Or choose a steep scramble up to Murray’s Monument beside the Queen’s Way for wonderful views and the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall.
There’s history in these hills as well, from the ruined farming settlement at Polmaddy to an ancient burial cairn at Glentrool. Keep an eye out for artworks amongst the trees too. A lofty red sandstone spire near Talnotry, and an earthwork labyrinth beside the Raiders’ Road Forest Drive.
For the more adventurous and well-prepared there are also some unforgettable hill routes. From Cornish Hill in the north to the mighty Merrick above Glentrool, the highest peak in southern Scotland.
