Damside is a 480 hectare former opencast coal mine site located in North Lanarkshire, 1.5 km south of Shotts. Damside lies between upland forestry and windfarms to the south, and mixed pastures and woodland to the north. The A71 runs along the site’s northern boundary. Our management objectives for Damside under this plan focus on new woodland creation, for a long-term sustainable supply of timber, improved biodiversity, and enhanced recreational offer. 

Following extensive analysis and consultation, the Land Management Plan for Damside was formally approved by Central Scotland Conservancy in September 2021 and is scheduled for renewal by September 2031.

Timeline

• Winter 2020 – Site survey and analysis.
• Spring 2021 – Creation of design concept for the woodland including social, silvicultural and conservation aims.
• Summer 2021 – Consultation with local community and other statutory stakeholders on a draft plan with a view to seek subsequent approval from Scottish Forestry. As part of the approval process, the plan was placed on Scottish Forestry’s public register for 28 days.
• September 2021 – the plan received approval.
