Lochgoilhead forest land management plan (LMP, previously referred to as design plans) was approved by Forestry Commission Scotland on 2nd March 2010, following consultation with a range of stakeholders. The approval period is for ten years so the plan is due for revision and re-submission in March 2020.

The plan area (PDF 2MB) lies at the head of Loch Goil and is within The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The total area of the plan is 4122ha, of which 1625ha is forested. In 2010 approximately 200ha (13%) of the woodland was made up of broadleaved species. The total elevation range is from sea level to 847m, at the summit of Ben Donich; trees have been planted to a maximum elevation of about 450m.

The LMP recognises the landscape setting and conservation and recreation potential of the area. Objectives emphasise the importance of establishing and maintaining a diverse, resilient forest capable of delivering a wide range of economic and environmental benefits. They include:

  • sustainable timber production
  • diversification of species and age structure
  • protecting and enhancing ancient semi-natural woodland
  • protecting heritage features

The felling and restocking programme outlined in the plan has progressed with some minor modifications. There has been additional felling associated with the clearance of trees damaged in storms in 2011/2012. Where larch was specified in restocking programmes alternative species have been used as there is a moratorium on planting larch due to the risk posed by Ramorum disease. A summary of additional operations can be found in the mid term review.

A link to the plan text can be found below along with various maps. Many of the factors affecting the development of the plan are shown in the analysis and concept map and the conservation map. Generalised plan proposals are shown in the management zones map, with more detailed felling and restock proposals in the management and restocking maps.
