We know that Gaelic is an important part of Scotland’s history, identity, and culture. We want to contribute to keeping Gaelic language alive and thriving.

How we do this

To do this, we worked with Bòrd na Gàidhlig (the national body supporting Gaelic) to create a Gaelic Language Plan. Like other public organisations, our plan focuses on three main goals:

  • Equal respect – Gaelic is an official language of Scotland. We treat it with equal respect as English language
  • Active offer – We don’t wait for people to ask. We offer appropriate Gaelic services up front, to the public and our staff
  • Mainstreaming – Our aim is to make Gaelic a normal, everyday part of work and public life. We hope this will make people feel comfortable using it

This supports the bigger goal of the National Gaelic Language Plan. The plan wants to see more people using Gaelic, more often, in more places.
