The North Sannox Land Management Unit is located 2 km north of the village of Sannox on the island of Arran. Covering an area of 127.5 ha, the area comprises a mix of planted woodland, predominantly native broadleaves, and open ground.  It is part of Scotland’s national forests and land owned by Scottish Ministers on behalf of the people of Scotland and managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).

The current land management plan identifies management objectives and sets out our operations over a ten year period (2025 - 2035). The successful delivery of this plan will contribute to the objectives of FLS's Corporate Plan, as well as the priorities, objectives and vision of Scotland's Forestry Strategy.

The plan was developed in accordance with the requirements of the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) and has been approved by Scottish Forestry. The UKFS is the benchmark for sustainable forestry practice and the Scottish Government is committed to its use.

The land management plan and supporting maps are available to download below.

Community Consultation

Consultation with stakeholders (including the local community) is a requirement of the land management planning process, but it is also a valuable opportunity for FLS to engage with the public, talk about our work, and discover what's important to you. Our initial consultation period is now over and we would like to thank those who took the time to participate.

Long Term Vision

North Sannox will develop into a resilient and diverse native woodland which will provide a mosaic of habitats, including open habitats, fringe woodland habitats and varied canopy coverage within wooded areas. With healthy herb and shrub layers within a naturally regenerating native broadleaf woodland, this site will be eventually revert to temperate rainforest habitat Management

 Objectives

  • Continue with PAWS* restoration and expansion of native broadleaf woodlands
  • Target removal of non-native conifer species, and any Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS), in buffer area around the Special Protection Area, and in PAWS zone
  • Manage open hillside habitats as per the agreed Arran Moors SSSI / SA Management Plan

* PAWS = Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites
