Important

Many of our destinations have been affected by Storm Bram. Please follow all local signage and check ahead of visiting for local closures.

We are prioritising tree clearance work based on immediate danger and/or access issues.

Galloway Forest Park is a paradise for wildlife watchers.

You’re likely to hear the chatter of woodland birds and the mewing cry of buzzards or spot roe deer darting through the trees. You may even encounter some of our more elusive residents, like nightjars, water voles and red kites.

Wildlife hides

Red Deer Range
It’s easy to meet Britain’s largest land mammal at the Red Deer Range. Opened in 1977 the range is home to around 25 red deer. You can watch them from the viewing area or hide. The Red Deer Range is especially special in autumn for the annual rut. This is the time of year the stags fight it out for the attention of the females.

Wild Goat Park
Our colourful long-haired goats are not to be missed either. You should get great views of this ancient breed from the Wild Goat Park, along The Queen’s Way. There are around 50 wild goats living in the enclosure and several hundred living in the hills. Stop here in spring to spot their cute new-born kids.

Wild Watch Hide, Kirroughtree

Scamper along to the Wild Watch Hide at Kirroughtree for a good chance of seeing red squirrels and woodland birds. You can find the hide by taking the short easy most accessible Wild Watch Trail, which leads you to the hide. Stop by the displays in the café to discover what lives in the waterways, open hills and high in the trees.
