Lussa Long Term Plan

Lussa Forest lies to the north of Campbeltown and is centred around Lussa Loch, a hydro-electric scheme. The plan comprises the following blocks; East Lussa, Guesdale and West Lussa, covering 8000 hectares. 

These blocks adjoin and share common themes. The forest was planted with a single objective of commercial conifer production, with land purchases and subsequent planting over a long time period, starting in 1938.  It has subsequently been significantly restructured from 1990 onwards,  and diversified. The Boxing Day storm in 1998 saw over 400 ha of windblow damage. 

A number of windfarms have been built, starting with Beinn Tuirc 1 in 2000. Some of which straddle the plan boundary, others are subject to re powering proposals or awaiting planning consent. Peatland restoration projects have been introduced, dominating the higher ground. The forest has been impacted by Phytophthora ramorum resulting in the removal of much of the larch. Road infrastructure is largely complete, much of it shared with renewables companies.  A Strategic Timber Haul Route through the forest connects the B842, a timber haulage consultation route, with the A83. The Kintyre Way Core Path runs through the forest. 

Lussa Loch has various environmental designations protecting the Greenland White-fronted geese that use it.  Lussa Loch is owned by SSE, along with a network of pipeline corridors and weirs forming a hydro-electric scheme.  Numerous private water supplies are also to be found around the fringes of the forest, requiring consideration in the planning process. The Bellochantuy and Tangy Gorges SSSI also partly falls within the plan area. There are five Scheduled Monuments in the plan area and others just outside. Other neighbours include hill farms and private forestry.

Renaming Land Management Plans as Long Term Plans

Land Management Plans are in the process of becoming known as Long Term Plans, a change needed as a result of changes taking place in legislation.

The Land Reform Act introduces an alternative use for the term Land Management Plan which relates specifically to the forthcoming obligations set out under this banner. These terms are used interchangeably on our website, but both currently reference our plans developed in line with the UK Forestry Standard.

  2. Protection of designated sites -  Kintyre Goose Roosts SSSI/SPA/RAMSAR; 5 Scheduled Ancient Monument’s
  3. Protection of public and private water supplies; and hydro-electric schemes
  4. To comply with UKWAS guidance for certification and UKFS
  5. Blanket bog/deep peat restoration
  6. Incorporation of consented windfarm developments into the plan
  7. Incorporation of forest health resilience management measures – larch removal
