FLS calls on public to help address motorbike vandalism in Kilpatrick hills
Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is asking members of the public to help address vandalism and public safety risks caused by motorbike and quad riders illegally accessing trails in FLS woodland in the Kilpatrick Hills.
The call comes following an increase in such activity, with one member of the public having reported seeing as many as ten vehicles at one time.
FLS is also working with Police Scotland to step up its response to the illegal quad and motor bike access.
Katy McGregor, FLS’ Area Visitor Services Manager, said;
“Using any motor vehicle on the trails that we manage is not only illegal but also potentially hazardous for other forest users, our staff and for the riders themselves.
“Motorbikes and quads can also churn up the ground quite badly. This not only messes up the trails to the extent where they can become treacherous underfoot but also damages the local ecosystem.
“This is environmental vandalism and dealing with it places an unnecessary and unwelcome pressure on our resources.
“We do not want members of the public to place themselves at risk but we would ask that they report any such activity to Police Scotland on the 101 number.”
FLS has taken a firm line when dealing with illegal access in the past, including the use of camera traps to identify those responsible. Vehicles have been confiscated and Police Scotland have also reported individuals to the Procurator Fiscal.
FLS is a member of the West Dunbartonshire Partnership Against Rural Crime group and liaise with the police regarding illegal bikes and quads.
Katy added;
“Unauthorised motorised vehicle access to Scotland’s national forests is illegal and we will take action to address this issue where it arises.”
