Ten year plan for Kirroughtree Forest looking for feedback
Forestry and Land Scotland is inviting people to offer their views on the development of a new Land Management Plan for Kirroughtree Forest.
Kirroughtree - the gateway to the beautiful Galloway Forest Park – is renowned for its visitor centre, walking trails and wildlife and, as one of the world class 7stanes mountain bike venues, its superb variety of MtB trails.
The site also encompasses a number of ancient woodlands around the town of Newton Stewart. Among these are Bower Wood and Knockman Wood, both treasured by local walkers for their wildlife, archaeological sites, and stunning views across the Wigtown estuary.
The new land management plan will focus on restoring these ancient woodlands, providing a quality experience for visitors, and sustainable timber production.
Forest Planner, Carol Finch, said;
“As with all of our land management plans, we’re looking at how we manage this site over the next ten years and also outline our ideas for the ten years beyond that.
“It is really about getting the most out of Kirroughtree both in terms of the timber it produces and in how it contributes more broadly to benefitting biodiversity and the public.
“We’re planning to hold some public drop-in events in autumn 2022, which will give us the opportunity to explain what we’re looking to do and to also hear some ideas and get some constructive feedback from members of the public.
“We’ll make details available once our plans are more settled but in the meantime, all the relevant documents are online so anyone with an interest can have a look and provide feedback at their leisure.”

This current round of consultation will remain open until mid-August 2022.
