Carron Valley Land Management Plan
Carron Valley Land Management Plan navigation
Following extensive analysis and consultation, the Carron Valley Land Management Plan was formally approved by Central Scotland Conservancy in July 2026 and is scheduled for renewal by July 2036.
The plan area covers over 3,110 hectares and lies approximately 12km south-west of Stirling. Around 75% of the area is forested, mainly with spruce, while the remainder is open land.
The forest is an important source of softwood timber in the Scottish Lowlands, and surrounds Carron Valley Reservoir, which is owned and managed by Scottish Water. The area is also valued for recreation and supports a range of wildlife, including red squirrel, osprey and pine marten.

Plan objectives
- Continue to address major forest resilience threats such as Phytophthora ramorum, windblow, and other pests or diseases, including through compliance with the Carron Valley Forest statutory plant health notice (SPHN).
- Continue to protect the water environment, particularly in the context of drinking water supplies, and other sensitive catchments.
- Ensure that long-term forest productivity is maintained and contributes a range of (primarily softwood) forest products.
- Ensure continuity of mature forest cover for key species such as red squirrel and osprey while limiting operational conflicts.
- Increase the area of native woodland, primarily located within a wider habitat network.
- Maintain recreational provisions within the working forest through appropriate forest design and management.
Progress update
The Carron Valley Land Management Plan was approved on 3 July 2026, following publication on the Scottish Forestry Public Register in April. Prior to this, stakeholder engagement on the draft proposals was carried out in May and June 2025.
