Gin Bothy announced as first commercial tenant to move into Glen Prosen

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has welcomed local business, The Gin Bothy, as the first commercial enterprise to move into Glen Prosen.

The announcement follows an extensive consultation process that included taking expressions of interest to find suitable uses for the various estate buildings.

The Bothy Distillery, scheduled to begin operations in spring 2025, is a major step to the full utilisation of the buildings at the head of the glen and forms part of FLS’s wider strategy to create new jobs and bring economic benefits to the local community.

The company will be leasing the complex of industrial buildings along with two other properties including a residential premises on the estate. The set up of a small sustainable craft distillery will result in several additional staff in the immediacy with a forecast of six new roles over the next three years. The distillery will also be a drawcard for visitors.

FLS Angus Glens Programme Manager Christine Reid said:

“We are excited to welcome Bothy Trading into Glen Prosen.

“The business has strong local roots that will only be enhanced by moving to the glen; this new venture will support existing and new jobs in the area as well as fostering sustainable tourism.

“Discussions with several other interested parties keen to set up in FLS-managed Glen Prosen are at an advanced stage and we look forward to connecting more people with the evolving landscape restoration here.”

Gin Bothy founder Kim Cameron said:

“I grew up in the glen neighbouring Glen Prosen, so I know how special the area is. With just one road in and one road out this remote location is one of a kind. Its seclusion and natural beauty provide the perfect backdrop for crafting spirits that truly capture the essence of Scotland, while allowing us to champion sustainability and preserve the landscape for future generations.

“Our vision for The Bothy Distillery is about more than whisky, it’s about creating a place where people can connect with Scotland’s natural beauty and heritage. We’re proud to be working with FLS as guardians of this special place and sharing its rich history as part of our whisky experience.”

    Background

FLS brought the land and buildings at the head of Glen Prosen into public ownership in November 2022. The acquisition linked neighbouring parcels of public land, providing opportunities for landscape scale restoration along with supporting opportunities for economic and social benefits for the local community.

The craft distillery will be home to the Bothy Brand’s new range of whisky products and see the creation of additional jobs.
