Star-gazing at its best

Off the beaten track, this site provides easy access to the Talnotry walking trail, the 7stanes Big Country route and The Eye sculpture located beside the loch. It is also a great place to view the night sky due to the lack of light pollution experienced at this location.

The nearest town is Newton Stewart, about 9 miles away, which has public toilets, shops and cafes.

There are no formal waymark trails at the Black Loch, however, you can access the Talnotry Trail a short walk from the loch. 

Car parking information

There is no charge for day parking at Black Loch.

Please park with care and consideration. In particular please park in designated parking areas only and do not block entrances or gates.

Stay the Night

Our Stay the Night scheme now runs right through the year. This means self-contained motorhomes and campervans will be able to park overnight for one night in some of our car parks.

There is a £7 charge to Stay the Night at this car park. Payment can be made through RingGo with details of how to do this at each car park.

Getting here

Directions: If travelling from Newton Stewart Black Loch is the first forest road entrance on the left after the Wild Goat Park and is signed Black Loch. Follow this forest road along a narrow track, over a small concrete bridge and as the road veers to the left, the Stay the Night location is on the left. If travelling from New Galloway, Black Loch is the first forest road entrance on the right after the Red Deer Range entrance and is signed Black Loch. Follow this forest road along a narrow track, over a small concrete bridge and as road veers to the left, the Stay the Night location is on the left.
