With winter solstice just days away, we thought we'd share some great places to explore during this time of year. Whether you fancy something active or want to get outside and connect with nature, there is something for everyone. Make sure to check when sunset is and bring a torch just in case!
Glentrool
Glentrool offers fascinating history, beautiful landscapes, old oak woodlands and wildlife. Learn more on a range of four trails graded easy to strenuous. Glenmore
Set in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park is Glenmore. With good transport links to nearby Aviemore and miles of trails to explore it is a great area to visit over the winter. Only a few minutes from the car park, you can stand on the beach at Loch Morlich while looking at the snow covered mountains above. There are many car parks in the glen, each offering a different experience of the Caledonian Forest.

Glencoe Lochan
Close to Glencoe village, there are three one-mile long trails here. With the shorter days, the trails here make the perfect escape without ever having to venture too far. Experience tranquillity on the easy-access Lochan Trail, walk under towering redwoods on the Woodland Trail and see Glencoe's volcanic past with stunning views on the Mountain Trail.

Tarbet Isle
Set on the banks of Loch Lomond in Argyll Forest Park is Tarbet Isle. The isle itself sits offshore and is referred to as ‘Honeymoon Island’ due to tales that newly married couples were sent to spend a week on the island together – the marriage was thought to have a good chance of success if they were still on speaking terms at the end of the week. The trail here offers a shorter excursion of around half an hour, although you may well spend much longer soaking in the views to Ben Lomond and the loch below.

Glentress
As well as some of the best mountain bike trails in the country, Glentress offers six great walking trails and a Wildlife Hub.
