Talnotry
Scramble up to Murray’s Monument beside the Queen’s Way for wonderful views and the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall.
Polmaddy

Knockman Wood (closed)
Visit the old oakwood at Knockman Wood, home to the ancient, chambered cairn of Boreland.
Keep an eye out for artworks amongst the trees too, including a lofty red sandstone spire near Talnotry and an earthwork labyrinth beside the Raiders’ Road forest drive.
For the more adventurous and well-prepared there are also some unforgettable hill routes. From Cornish Hill in the north to mighty Merrick above Glentrool, the highest peak in southern Scotland.
